Will Crime Tycoons have a second season on Netflix?

The “Tycoons of Crime” series debuted on Netflix on March 7, 2024 and after a week of airing it is already the most watched in the catalog to date. The production is a spin-off of the 2019 film of the same name, written and directed by Guy Ritchie.

The plot is different from the film, but shares similar themes and a central setting. The series tells the story of Eddie Horniman (Theo James), a young British Army soldier who inherits his family’s rural property and discovers that it is part of a marijuana empire. The series explores the class friction between the characters and the eternal struggle for power.

Eddie tries to defeat the criminals, but ends up being seduced by crime. The cast also includes Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson and Giancarlo Esposito.

The original film has an elite cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam and Colin Farrell. However, none of them return in the series.

The film “Crime Tycoons” tells the story of Michael Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), a drug dealer who builds a marijuana empire by turning aristocrats’ estates into underground farms. When Pearson tries to sell his business to a billionaire, he becomes involved with dangerous criminal figures. The film was a success, grossing $115 million worldwide on a budget of just $22 million.

“Crime Tycoons” series or miniseries?

On the same day as its premiere on Netflix, the website Omelete reported that the platform had confirmed that “Crime Tycoons” would only have one season. However, it is not clear whether the series is a miniseries or not. Director Guy Ritchie, who is involved in the project, is also working on the Ray Donovan spin-off and may not have time to direct a second season.

Another piece of information that “Crime Tycoons” will not have a second season was shared by actor Theo James, who plays Eddie Horniman. He revealed that director and showrunner Guy Ritchie’s production, in fact, includes only one season.

According to Marc Helwig, head of Miramax studies, there is no consensus yet. He stated that they are having talks with some screenwriters to define the path to follow for the series.

Helwig spoke about the possibility of a Season 2 renewal in a conversation with Deadline. He confirmed a conversation he had with Guy Ritchie and reported that they have already started having “active” discussions about Crime Tycoons season 2. However, she admitted that the first season will have to do well on Netflix before they can formally begin development on new episodes.

Look at what Helwig said: “We’ve started this process,” we’ve talked to some writers, we’ve definitely had a lot of discussions with Guy about what he might want to do in a second season, what things to focus on. The first season has to go well, then we’ll know more, but there has already been an active and ongoing discussion about what a second season would be.”

Actor Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Stanley Johnston, is also hoping for a new season. He stated that the first season ended well and that the production still has a lot to offer.

A fun fact about the series: the actor Max Beesley, who plays Henry Collins, is a boxer who was injured when he was a child. His combat experience helped him create the character.

critical reception

Critical reception for the “Crime Tycoons” series is mixed. The series received an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.4/10 on IMDB. On Metacritic the score was around 65%.

Variety’s Aramide Tinubu called the series “a brilliant show,” while Time’s Judy Berman said Crime Tycoons “is strangely boring.”

Journalist Ferdosa, of Screen Rant, also expressed mixed comments on the production, praising Kaya Scodelario’s performance, but also stating that it is a “disappointing work by Guy Ritchie”. Angie Han, of The Hollywood Reporter, also follows this analytical line, maintaining that the work “entertains, but never dazzles”.

Director Guy Ritchie has finally managed to create a new work about the British criminal world worthy of his two masterpieces: Games, Hugs and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch – Pigs and Diamonds? Watch to draw your own conclusions.
