The former aide-de-camp denied being pressured by police officers to make a statement, admitted talking “nonsense” and complained that friends called him a “leper”.
BRASILIA – Before being arrested by the Federal Police (PF) this Friday 22nd, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former aide-de-camp of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), was questioned by a judge assisting Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The judge asked for explanations about the audios in which he attacked the Minister of the Federal Court (STF) and the PF. Mauro Cid admitted he had made a mistake, but he did not want to say who made the “outburst” about the investigations against Bolsonaro.
This Thursday 21st, the magazine I wait published the audio of the CID, who spoke with an unknown interlocutor about the plea agreement signed in September with the PF. In one of the recordings, the lieutenant colonel stated that investigators “did not want to know the truth” about the attempted coup and that Alexandre de Moraes would be “the law”. “He arrests, releases whenever he wants, with the Prosecutor’s Office, without the Prosecutor’s Office, with accusation, without accusation,” the former aide-de-camp said.
Below, see what the soldier said and what he hid in his new interrogation:
The colonel’s nonsense and outburst
At the STF Mauro Cid denied having been pressured by the PF or the Judiciary to obtain the plea deal. According to him, the audios with the attacks on the investigators are just an outburst of “those who want to break down the door and end up talking nonsense”. The lieutenant colonel further stated that the conversation was “private, informal, private and with no intention of being exposed by the magazine”.
“It’s an outburst, it makes you want to break down the door and end up saying nonsense. The generic, everyone, ends up saying things that shouldn’t have been said. Given the situation you’re experiencing, it was an outburst. It’s a disservice that Veja I give back to the investigations, to my family, to my daughters”, reads an excerpt of the statement.
Mauro Cid doesn’t remember the interlocutor
The army colonel was asked who the person he had spoken to was and complained about the behavior of detectives investigating the attempted coup. Mauro Cid disagrees. He claimed he didn’t remember it. He said he only talks to the people closest to him, including his relatives. The officer specified that “he is a recluse, practically at home, has no social life and does not work. He does not remember who he said these outbursts to, at a bad moment. He has not yet been able to identify who” this person was. He doesn’t believe anyone from the neighboring group has contact with the press. The conversation would probably have taken place over the telephone. Probably a cell phone,” he said
The CID admitted resentment with Bolsonaro
In one of the audios released by Veja, Cid revealed that he felt resentment towards Bolsonaro for being the only one to be “screwed” after the investigation against the former president began. The lieutenant colonel said the former CEO became a “millionaire” thanks to transfers made through Peeves by supporters, while his army career and financial life were damaged
According to the CID, while Bolsonaro has enriched himself with transfers and the other generals investigated for the coup attempt are in the reserve of the Armed Forces, his “career is collapsing”. The former aide-de-camp also claimed that his friends treat him like “a leper, who is afraid of harming himself.” “He wants to get his life back. He is in seclusion. The press always follows him. He is in agony. He has gained more than 10 kilos. The audio is an outburst. He believes that people should support him and support him”, says another excerpt from the testimony.
In another recording, the lieutenant colonel says Bolsonaro and other suspects will face sentences of more than 100 years in prison. The CID also mentions those arrested for the anti-democratic acts of January 8, 2023, calling them “little bastards” sentenced to 17 years by the STF.
According to Cid, he is frightened by the sentences that are handed down to people involved in the coup acts and “imagines the punishment that high-ranking people will face.”
Moraes remains confidential to avoid doubts
This Friday the 22nd, Minister Alexandre de Moraes lifted the secret on the CID’s new testimony. In the order the magistrate justified having done so to leave no doubt as to the fact that the soldier was not forced to plea bargain. “Taking into account the need to dispel any doubts about the legality, spontaneity and voluntariness of the collaboration of Mauro César Barbosa Cid, who fully confirmed the previous terms of his declarations,” wrote the STF minister.
As soon as he left the STF, Cid was arrested by the PF and taken to an Army Police barracks, where he was detained between May and September last year. The lieutenant colonel was first arrested during Operation Venire, which investigated fraud involving Bolsonaro and his daughter Laura’s vaccination cards.
