Find out how the 53-year-old coach earned the trust of the Braga president during his time at Minho
The reveal party has finally begun! Albeit unofficially, so to speak. But it will be Artur Jorge, 53, the new coach of Botafogo, who managed to take them out of Europe halfway through the current season. Now it’s time to meet the commander. To present it to the demanding Juventus fans, the Play10 listened to the journalist Thiago Correia, from the “Diário do Minho”. He followed the coach’s work at Braga closely. Are there, in fact, reasons to be excited?
“Technically Artur Jorge has the tools to make the Botafogo team shine. He can do it,” he began.
Born in Braga, Artur Jorge played in the youth team of the city club, spending his entire career with that team, with a very brief spell at Penafiel. As a coach, he was almost always linked to the club, both in the lower leagues and in the B team. When he left, he was never more than 100 kilometers from Minho’s capital.
“The biggest challenge for the coach will be, for the first time, being away from home. Arthur Jorge has always been in the infamous comfort zone. He must therefore demonstrate that he has created the wings to fly. But it is also true that, as they say here in Portugal, when he was called up to the first team he said “present”.
Important matches in the Champions League
The moment Artur Jorge took the lead from Quique Setién and Pedro Martins in the negotiations and approached the Mais Tradicional, a question mark fell on the heads of the Botafoguenses. Moments later, however, information about the commander’s recent past changed the perception of most blacks and whites.
“Braga enters the Portuguese Championship normally, with the obligation to be, at least, in fourth place, behind only the ‘big three’. In its first year, however, it surpassed the natural order and finished third. In fact, , it was the year in which the club scored the most points in its history, which is no small feat”, underlined Correia.
The good championship, in 2022-23, led Braga to the 2023/24 Champions League. The team from Northern Portugal worked a lot…
“He secured a place in the Champions League and, despite finishing third in the group, faced the mighty Real Madrid home and away. Against Union Berlin in Germany, he led Braga in an absolutely brilliant comeback. More late this year, he won the League Cup and brought another trophy to Pedreira.
“Simplicity and the John Textor factor for the work at Botafogo”
The idea of John Textor, majority shareholder of SAF do Botafogo, is to have him in a long-term project. In this sense the Portuguese coach could find himself more at ease at the Glorioso.
“He creates the famous rice and beans in the team, knows how to exploit the strengths of the players and sets up the team without great inventions. Here, at Braga, he has great support from the president António Salvador, who has always defended and protected him. Because it’s John Textor’s personal choice, you might feel some resemblance and help you feel at home,” he concluded.
