Palmeiras loses their unbeaten record in the first Paulista final for the third consecutive year

Verdão will have to reverse his opponent’s advantage once again to become champion

Palmeiras lost the first final of the Paulistão 2024 1-0 against Santos, last Sunday (31), in Vila Belmiro and said goodbye to an unbeaten run that lasted 20 games and more than four months.

The scenario experienced in Baixada Santista this weekend is not something very unknown to the inhabitants of Palmeiras, already accustomed to reversing two negative results in the last two championships in Sao Paulo.

In 2022, Abel Ferreira’s Verdão reached the final undefeated, but ended up losing the first final 3-1 against São Paulo, at Morumbi. On the return leg, historic 4-0 at Allianz Parque and title secured.

Last year Verdão also reached the decision undefeated, but ended up being surprised by Água Santa and also lost the first final 2-1. In the return leg, another 4-0 defeat and the 25th Paulista title guaranteed.

Now Palmeiras will be able to count on the strength of their fans to overturn the result and not lose the title at home against a historic rival.

The defeat in the first match of the final will upset the technical committee’s plans for the Libertadores’ debut, Wednesday (3), against San Lorenzo, in Argentina, since Abel Ferreira will have to save some starters due to Paul’s decision.
