Edmundo was almost arrested in Ecuador during a Palmeiras Libertadores match; Remember

‘Animal’ pushed the TV reporter and kicked the camera

Former player Edmundo turns 53 this Tuesday (2). During his career, the “Animal” got into trouble. In one of them, he was arrested after pushing an Ecuadorian television journalist who was trying to interview him and breaking a camera by kicking the equipment to the ground, images that went around the world.

The case happened in the 1995 Libertadores, in the group stage, after Palmeiras’ 1-0 defeat against Nacional, in Quito. Angry about the result and missing a penalty, Edmundo ended up acting out in rage.

He also apologized and said he only had that attitude because he tripped over equipment cables while walking out onto the lawn and the camera fell and hit his head. Subsequently, Edmundo also claimed that he was provoked by the Ecuadorian professional.

The Union of Film Reporters of Ecuador, however, did not accept the apology and filed a lawsuit against Edmundo. The court granted the request and ordered the arrest of the Brazilian attacker.

To prevent the player from being arrested, Palmeiras decided to confine him to a room in the hotel where the Palmeiras delegation was staying. Edmundo remained in the room for three days, while the police and army besieged the hotel.

The club’s then vice-president, Seraphim Del Grande, negotiated with the Brazilian embassy in Ecuador so that the player would not be arrested. In the end everything ended well and Edmundo was allowed to leave the hotel and go home.
