Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon played inseparable friends Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda on the hit series ‘Sex and the City’. Throughout the six seasons of both movies, audiences enjoyed their on-screen dynamic, but behind the scenes, they were rumored to be at loggerheads and actually couldn’t stand each other in real life.
Behind the scenes of ‘Sex and the City’: On-screen friends and real-life rivals
The strongest theory on the matter suggests that there was tension between Carrie Bradshaw and Samantha Jones, fueled by differences of opinion and rivalries on set. These rumors intensified over time, especially during the production of the films based on the series.
It’s no secret that Samantha has become one of the most beloved characters in the franchise to such an extent that her popularity even surpassed that of Carrie. Kim Cattrall, once she realized that she made less money than Sarah Jessica Parker, decided to ask for a salary adjustment for her and her other two co-stars, but it never came, which could have started their bad relationship.
Sarah Jessica Parker started producing on “Sex and the City,” which caused her salary to increase, and when it was revealed that she was the only actress with a no-nudity clause in her contract, things escalated even more.
Although the rivalry was not confirmed, Kim Cattrall assured in an interview in 2017 that she never considered her co-stars friends and did not want to participate in any project related to the famous HBO series again.
In the same interview, the actress who brought Samantha to life expressed that she refused to return to her character for a third “Sex and the City” movie, which explains why it never made it to the screens.
Kim Cattrall attacked Sarah Jessica Parker in 2018
The feud between the two became public in 2018 when Sarah Jessica Parker reached out to Kim on social media to express her condolences over her brother’s death, and she responded in kind.
For their part, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon stayed out of the drama between their co-stars, though they also hinted that Kim Cattrall was the one who started to change and even stopped talking to them.
In 2021 the series ‘And Just Like That…’ was released and although Kim Cattrall was not involved in the first season, in the second she had a small appearance in the last episode where she has a phone conversation with Carrie.
It is alleged that due to their poor relationship in real life, the 67-year-old actress asked to film the scene without interacting with Sarah Jessica or any of her former co-stars. According to the IMDb portal, she earned about 1 million dollars for her performance, making it clear that Samantha is an indispensable character in “Sex and the City” and that her absence in “And Just Like That…” could was the reason why it was rejected by the fans.
