Wolverine and Cyclops have had one of comics’ most delightful rivalries for decades, and now Marvel has a perfect ending for it all
Actor Hugh Jackman said in the past that he was only sure of his good work in the role of Wolverine when he found a young, frowning Cyclops fan. Teammate rivalry is one of the most interesting relationship dynamics in the X-Men and has grown complex over time. And, in perfect timing with the arrival of animation X-Men ’97THE wonder The comics gave Logan and Scott Summers the perfect ending.
- X-Men highlights the “trisal” of Wolverine, Jean and Cyclops in farewell to the Krakoan era
- Marvel finally takes on polyamory between Wolverine, Cyclops and Jean Grey
Beware of spoilers for Weapon X-Men #1!
Wolverine is a hunter and survivor who enjoys breaking the rules and acts on impulse most of the time, disdaining authority and orders. Cyclops, on the other hand, has learned to be disciplined and to establish and respect rules, even submitting to various concessions, in order to be able to lead the team created by Professor X when he was still very young: in short, they are personalities who naturally oppose each other.
Ever since they met and started working together in the X-Men, they both started teasing each other, especially after Logan fell in love with Scott’s girlfriend Jean Grey, and they started living in a love triangle. This made for a lot of funny moments, like X-Men ’97 brought him back with credit.

Over the years, this rivalry became even more interesting in moments of tension, when both had to join forces. In these moments, we could see that both of them are similar in many ways and, in fact, they also have admiration and respect for each other. You know when you argue with your brother but you protect him in a fight? — “The only one who can beat my brother is me!” is pretty much how Logan and Scott feel about each other.
It’s okay that there was also a phase of hatred, which divided the team, as in the sagas The Age of Apocalypse AND The Schism. But in recent years, in It was Krakoana, this dynamic has gained another interesting chapter. During Mutant Utopia, Marvel revealed that, in fact, the love triangle of Scott, Jean and Logan has evolved into a “trisal”, in which everyone captures each other, including the two rivals.
And now, a new comic shows the perfect conclusion to the rivalry between Cyclops and Wolverine.
What is the perfect ending?
In X-Men Weapon #1, the plot is set in an alternate reality, on Earth-93068, where Wolverine’s Cyclops appear to be stoking an even fiercer rivalry than in their early years together. An alternate version of the Phoenix Force fused with Jean Gray brings together a team of Wolverines from across the multiverse to find and kill the villain Onslaught, who appeared in a 1990s storyline as a fusion of the darker aspects of Professor X and Magneto.
Onslaught invades the multiverse in an attempt to dominate all possible realities, and while the villain may be nearly omnipresent, Phoenix narrows the hunt to a few worlds, and Earth-93068 ends up being the battlefield.
In this reality, humans and mutants coexist in peace after being forced to act together against an alien invasion of creatures known as the Badoon, which has nearly decimated the entire world.

The invaders fail to completely destroy Earth only because of one moment that sums up “the only one who can beat my brother is me”: Wolverine and Cyclops once again put aside their differences and unite in a final sacrifice against the Badoon, giving the planet’s defenses enough time to win the war.
And although this took place in an alternate reality, it’s the perfect conclusion to the historic rivalry between Wolverine and Cyclops.
