MTST deletes post referring to Jesus crucified and phrase about criminals after criticism

The movement linked to MP Guilherme Boulos admitted that the content was “inappropriate”

The leadership of the Homeless Workers’ Movement (MTST) has decided to delete a post published during Holy Week which referred to the image of Jesus Christ crucified while one of the Roman soldiers states: “a good criminal is a dead criminal”.

The publication led pre-candidates for mayor of São Paulo and right-wing parliamentarians to criticize fellow pre-candidate and federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL). It is connected to MTST.

The publication was made on Friday 29th, the day of the Passion of Christ. “Happy Good Friday!” MTST wrote in the image caption. The post had more than 1.5 million views.

Boulos, also a pre-candidate, is no longer part of the MTST, where he was a leader and fought for 20 years, but he still has an image linked to the movement.

The movement’s leadership wrote on its social network that the post was “inappropriate and therefore deleted from its networks.” “We reaffirm respect for Christian religions and commitment to freedom of religious expression” reads the MTST note. The demonstration also condemns Bolsonaro supporters for the political use of the post.

Criticism after the post during Holy Week

Also in Holy Week, Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), Boulos’ main opponent, called the post “heartbreaking.” “This gang of Boulos attacks everything and everyone. I am outraged,” he also wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“Guilherme Boulos seeks the support of evangelicals while his group of invaders blasphemes Jesus on the day of his death!”, said Kim Kataguiri (União). “Precisely on such an important day for Christians, Boulos’s MTST used the crucifixion to compare criminals to Jesus. How is it possible that someone considers this boy mayor of São Paulo?”, writes Marina Helena, candidate for mayor for the new one.

Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) allies also criticized Boulos. “The MTST, the movement of the current SP mayoral candidate, the invader Guilherme Boulos, attacks frontally the faith of millions of Brazilians, precisely on a sacred day for Christianity”, declared Fábio Wajngarten, councilor and lawyer of the former president.
