The 2024 Copa Libertadores is over for Botafogo. Two weeks ago we said that Alvinegro was far from the competition favourites. The team, however, surpassed the pessimistic prediction of the column and offered a disgraceful performance in the 3-1 defeat against Junior Barranquilla, Wednesday (3), on the opening day of the group stage of the tournament. It looked like Manchester City were training against an under-15 team from the English countryside. Embarrassing is an understatement. It’s impossible to believe in a team without a brain in midfield, whose only move is to throw balls into attack, without too much conviction.
Botafogo has sent a message to the continent: it is in no condition to remain in the Libertadores now. The next four rounds will therefore be in search of a place in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericano, one of the objectives of coach Artur Jorge. In the lantern, Alvinegro has one less trip than the other candidates. Does anyone believe that the team made up of Halter, Ponte, Hugo and the dying Eduardo will be able to score points at the LDU, in Casablanca, at the level of Quito? Only in case of planetary catastrophe. Lost case. Point.
