An attack of unknown origin and motivation occurred in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony. At that time the Jewish temple was not hosting events and the flames were quickly put out, with no injuries reported. The police are investigating the case: a synagogue in Oldenburg, a city in Lower Saxony, Germany, was the target of an attempted arson on Friday afternoon (05/04). There are no reports of injuries and police are investigating the incident.
The crime, of unknown origin and motivation, did not have any significant consequences since the fire, set near one of the doors of the Jewish temple, was immediately noticed and put out by the employees of a nearby cultural center. The venue was not hosting any events at the time.
Police announced they would increase security measures until the case was fully investigated.
Local leaders reacted by condemning the episode. Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) promised a rapid and diligent clarification of the attack. “Although the context of the act is not yet clear, it affected me greatly. Attempts to burn synagogues are absolutely reprehensible and terrible to me,” she said in a statement. “The Jewish men and women of Lower Saxony should not be afraid or feel threatened.”
The Oldenburg Alliance against Anti-Semitism and Anti-Zionism held an evening protest in front of the synagogue.
In October, a Jewish center in Berlin that houses a synagogue was also the target of arson. The attack, which came just over a week after the Hamas group’s atrocities against Israeli civilians, sparked outrage among German authorities and was classified at the time by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz as “inhuman” and “disgusting”.
