April 9 will see the release of the first trailer for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ or simply ‘Joker 2’, one of the most anticipated films of 2024 featuring performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
To anticipate this premiere, Warner Bros. revealed the official poster where we see the Joker and Harley Quinn dancing, although in France they had to modify a detail of the image due to a strict law.
France “censors” the poster of “Joker 2”: changes a detail of Joaquin Phoenix
The ‘Joker 2’ poster has been censored in France, at least that’s what some netizens have expressed on social networks.
Although the change is subtle, it has significant meaning for the laws of the European country in question because it aims to combat alcoholism and smoking.
In the opening image, Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix’s character) holds a cigarette in his hand. However, in the French version, this detail has been removed due to the Evin Law, enacted in 1991 in France.
This law prohibits any kind of direct or indirect pro-tobacco propaganda or advertising in various media, including cinema, so in the new poster we only see the Joker’s empty hand.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that this law forces studios to modify some of their posters. In the case of ‘Pulp Fiction’, a film by Quentin Tarantino, the cigarette that Uma Thurman had in the picture in question was also removed, although there were some exceptions.
The European country has allowed a cigarette to appear on the poster of the movie ‘Maestro’, starring Bradley Cooper. According to the “Espinof” portal, the poster was not modified because it met several conditions, the most important being that it represents a historical figure (in this case Leonard Bernstein) and that tobacco is inextricably linked to his image.
The cigar detail was only removed from the poster, since the film will arrive uncensored in France.
When is Joker 2 coming out?
Directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, the film “Joker: Folie à Deux” opens in Mexico on October 3, 2024, while in the United States it will arrive in theaters on Friday, October 4.
