Messias claims that “Faith in Brazil” is the result of the Lula government’s rapprochement with evangelicals

The Union Attorney General Minister said that the campaign was built to get closer to the segment and that he finds it easier to talk to evangelicals as he has been a member of the Baptist church for 40 years

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT TO CAMBRIDGE (USA) – The Minister of the Attorney General’s Office (AGU), Jorge Messias, has downplayed the rejection of evangelicals towards the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), recorded by the country’s main research institutes in the investigations carried out in March. “I don’t think the evangelical segment has the same resistance to the president,” Messias said at the Brazil Conference at Harvard University.

Polls commissioned by Palácio do Planalto reinforce the signs of a decline in Lula’s popularity, especially in the evangelical segment, which represents 30% of the electorate. Behind closed doors, as demonstrated by Estadaothe diagnosis is that the government has lost the communication battle with former president Jair Bolsonaro’s allies.

In response, Planalto organized the advertising campaign entitled “Faith in Brazil”. The action is based on the display of pieces with positive government indicators during the visits of Lula and ministers to the United States. Asked if he had participated in the conception of the project, Messias said that the slogan is the result of “the work that has been carried out since the campaign and our (government) approach to the segment”.

“I think we are achieving what the government committed to in the campaign and, for our part, I think the movement tends to be very positive,” Messias said. “Our work with the evangelical segment is a respectful relationship, but with a focus on building policies for the entire population, which is the role of the state. We must remember that the state is secular,” he continued.

Again according to the minister, Lula “kept absolutely everything he had committed to the evangelical people” during the campaign, presenting a letter of intent. However, Atlas/Intel poll data released on March 10 shows that 41% of evangelicals consider the PT administration to be bad or terrible. Among the general population, the negative rating is 32%.

Messias says that all ministers have an obligation to dialogue with different social sectors, but that he plays a leading role in approaching evangelicals since he is a follower of the religion. “Being that I’ve been an evangelical in the Baptist church for 40 years, I have a closer dialogue with the evangelical segment, but I dialogue with all religious segments,” he said.

The “Faith in Brazil” campaign wants to convey the idea that, after a year defined by Lula as that of the “plantation”, the time has come to “harvest” and the promises have materialized. The advert will appear on radio, TV, newspapers and digital media. On social media, the announcements will be framed by the words “Bote fé no Brasil”, in colored letters, next to “We are on the right path”.

Messias leads the dialogue with evangelicals together with ministers Alexandre Padilha, of the Secretariat for Institutional Relations, and Wellington Dias, of Social Development. Two weeks ago, Padilha and Messias met with members of the Evangelical Parliamentary Front in the PSD leadership office in the Chamber and heard many complaints.

OR Estadao showed that the main complaints of deputies are linked to the fact that, when they vote in favor of some government measure, they are always associated with the defense of abortion and drugs. The ministers said Lula does not defend these agendas.
