Is The Big Interview based on a true story?

The film “The Great Interview” premiered in the Netflix catalog on April 5, 2024 and attracted the attention of those who do not know the story behind the production. For those who don’t know, the film was based on real events that happened in 2019, when Prince Andrew gave a controversial interview to the BBC’s Newsnight newspaper.

“The Great Interview” portrays the behind-the-scenes look at the professionals who worked to obtain the bombshell testimony of Queen Elizabeth II’s son, who was then embroiled in a public scandal related to his connection to Jeffrey Epstein.

Understand the case

Jeffrey Epstein was a billionaire, successful investor and also a math and physics teacher at the Dalton School in New York. He had excellent relationships with personalities from the political and artistic world, including Prince Andrew.

Epstein spent his fortune on million-dollar properties, where he entertained celebrities, artists and politicians. But everything began to fall apart in 2005, when the case of sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl came to light. The girl recounted what happened and identified two other minors who were in the billionaire’s villa in Palm Beach. It was just the tip of the iceberg.

A Miami Herald report analyzed more than 2,000 documents, emails and evidence from the federal investigation involving other girls from the poor area. Epstein allegedly gave money in exchange for a massage at her home, an offer that in most cases ended in some sort of sexual exchange. Police found photos of girls throughout the house. But it all ended with a deal with prosecutors, which freed Epstein from life in prison and kept her assets.

Virginia Giufree became known as one of the victims of Jeffrey Epstein’s child sex trafficking. In several interviews, Virginia stated that Prince Andrew sexually abused her three times when she was 17 years old.

In 2022, the two signed an out-of-court settlement which, according to the press, reached a value of 12 million pounds, or R$75 million.

Jeffrey Epstein has been accused of trafficking dozens of girls, exploiting them, sexually abusing them and even paying them to look for other teenagers. In his last court appearance, in July 2019, it was established that he would spend at least a year in prison, awaiting the trial which would take place in the summer of 2020. The entrepreneur has always denied any wrongdoing and declared innocent. accusations against him. In August 2019, Epstein was found dead in his cell.

The big interview

The royal interview (real and with the monarch, I couldn’t resist the pun) took place in November 2019 during Prince Andrew’s appearance on the BBC’s “Newsnight” program. He was questioned about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre’s allegations.

The interview was given to journalist Emily Maitlis, played by Gillian Anderson in the film. Andrew, played by Rufus Sewell, recalled a meeting he had with Epstein in 2010. The tycoon had already been convicted that year.

Andrew said that the meeting was intended to end the friendship and that he would not make this type of telephone communication. The prince also spoke out regarding Virginia Giuffre’s accusations. He said he met the royal family member in London in 2001. He said they had dinner, went to a nightclub and then had sex at the residence of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s ex-girlfriend. The Queen’s son continued to make unpleasant and controversial statements during the programme, creating a very negative image among the public.

“The Great Interview”

Although the title emphasizes the actual incident, the film portrays more of the behind the scenes of the incident. The film is an adaptation of the book “Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews”, the production also stars Billie Piper as Sam McAlister, a BBC producer who wrote the work, and Keeley Hawes as by Amanda Thirsk, Andrew’s secretary.
