“Mixing Karl Marx and John Wick”: class struggle in an action version, this is the car in the series tonight on ARTE

Tonight, Arte airs the first three episodes of Machine, an explosive series to say the least that mixes action and humor against a backdrop of social angst.

Created by Thomas Biedegin (Just Suddenly) and Fred Grivois (Air Resistance), the series follows a woman with a mysterious past, Car (Margot Bancillon).

Wanted by the army’s secret services, this young incompetent returns to his hometown incognito and finds a job maintaining the production line of a home appliance factory.

The company recently acquired by a Korean industrialist is a mess. And someone who wanted to keep a low profile, despite himself, finds himself at the center of a revolt that animates the workers.

But what no one knows is that this little temporary employee is a former special forces officer trained in martial arts and the use of weapons. Therefore, the machine will put its knowledge of kung fu at the service of the workers’ struggle.

Consisting of six episodes, Machine is an explosive action series filled with humor Margot Bancillon (please) and JoeyStarr (substitute).

Wanting to explain the class struggle to a junior

At the head of this series: Fred Grivois. After the first film, the director was looking for a new project. Although he first came up with the idea of making a horror film, Fred Grivois couldn’t find anything. It was very scary in French culture“.

While watching Stephane Brize’s film, The Law of the Market, the director realized that the French were not afraid of mystical things, but of losing their jobs. That’s how the idea of Machine was born.

When I saw Stephen Briese’s film, I said to myself that young people will not necessarily understand what leftism and trade unionism are. I started with this idea of trying to find a fun way to explain to today’s teenagers what class struggle is and what leftism is. And because I have two teenagers at home who are fans John WickI told myself that mixing Karl Marx and John Wick would still be fun“, he explained at the press conference.

and let’s continue, “I have two much younger daughters and I thought it would be a shame that they don’t have the characters that I had growing up. The only female characters in the film are Ellen Ripley alienwho is sort of a victim of whatever happens to him or Lisbeth Salander Millennium who has to go through difficult things. So I wanted to create a fun and iconic heroine with Machine“.

A physical role that requires intense training

To play the role of the machines, the producer chose to call Margot Bancilhon. And suffice it to say, the actor gave himself up, performing most of his stunts.

On this topic, Margot Bancilhon also talked about how “It’s rare to find roles as powerful as a woman that also require preparation and physical transformation. I thought it would be nice to do something different“.

To learn stunts and fight choreography, the actor underwent intense sports training. And to get the result that we see on the screen, Margot Bancilhon hired a sports trainer who trained in Thai boxing six months before filming. Enough to get back in shape, but first learn how to throw punches.

The actor then underwent a week of stunt training, as well as an additional week of fighting and choreography.

He could not learn everything before shooting, he continued to work until the big day.I feel like I worked on my body more on set. Between takes I asked for a weight to stay warm and protect my body. After all, I played sports every day“, he explained on this topic.

Although she was not seriously injured on set, Margot Bancilhon revealed that she “He almost broke his nose on stage with the blind master“.
