The young man allegedly attempted to steal the car of an off-duty police officer
A 16-year-old teenager was shot dead this Thursday afternoon (11), in Canoas, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. According to the police, the young man suspected he had tried to steal a car from an off-duty sergeant and fought back. The accident was reported around 5.30pm, in Rua Boa Vista, in the Rio Branco neighbourhood.
According to initial information, the officer, who was off duty, witnessed the action of two individuals who acted suspiciously next to a parked vehicle. When he approached to check the situation, he was surprised by one of the subjects who had approached with the intention of stealing the car.
Faced with the imminent threat, the officer reacted and defended himself, shooting at the attacker, who succumbed to his injuries and died on the spot. The other individual involved in the crime managed to escape and has not yet been located.
DHPP Chief Deputy Arthur Reguse stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that all circumstances of the case will be duly investigated. He also stressed that, so far, the evidence indicates that the officer acted in self-defense, as he was in a risky situation and would have used the necessary means to protect himself.
