In 1999, The Sixth Sense took the world of cinema by storm, stunning with its thrilling plot and a final revelation that turned the world upside down…
The film, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Bruce Willis, a young Haley Joel Osment and Toni Collette, was subsequently nominated for no less than six Oscars in the following categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Supporting Actor woman Toni Collette and Best Supporting Actor Haley Joel Osment.
And speaking of the latter, in a video dating back to 1999, we see a young guy honoring his playing partner during an awards ceremony. Called to the stage by Alan Rickman, Haley Joel Osment begins his speech in front of a room full of stars, including Bruce Willis. And it is an anecdote about the latter, both funny and disturbing, that he begins to tell on the first day of shooting, with the heat on the set, the passing of an ice cream truck and the star’s enthusiastic gesture to all but one of those present…
“The first day of shooting The Sixth Sense took place at the end of a very hot summer and we were shooting on location as if it were a cool fall day. Bruce was wearing a trench coat and I was wearing a heavy jacket and it was very hot and humid. Bruce tends to attract large crowds when working outside. Everyone was focused on their work: it’s the first day and everyone wants to do everything, even people were quiet when needed and concentrated on what was happening. So focused that no one heard the bell of the ice cream parlor next door. Nobody but Bruce.“
“Bruce walked to the end of the street, grabbed the nearest and most trusted assistant, the assistant went to the nearest Philadelphia police officer, and immediately sirens blared in the distance and chased the unsuspecting well-meaning man, whose life story ended when he discovered that he was going to distribute ice cream to everyone who came to watch. And Bruce Willis paid for the whole neighborhood. The boy didn’t leave until everyone had their ice cream. Well, not everyone…“
During a (fakely) emotional pause, the young actress continued her story, drawing laughter from the room we see Bruce Willis Exactly or the late Michael Clarke Duncan laughs to tears at his next words: “I was working, I was doing a scene with Bruce, and of course I had to keep working and uh… I didn’t get it. People have been asking me how I got through those crying scenes, well, I was thinking about my first day at work. Everyone got ice cream, everyone except me.“
Finally, the young man concludes:Bruce, thank you for saving the world one second and bringing me to tears the next. You are destined to become larger than life because of the size of your heart.“
