Arthur Xavier scores an excellent record at the Belo Horizonte Meeting

The Loterias Caixa Paralympic Meeting in Belo Horizonte marked a great achievement in swimming competitions. Arthur Xavier Ribeiro of Minas Gerais beat the Paralympic index in the 100m backstroke in the S14 (intellectual disability) class. In total, the competition brings together 438 participants and will end this Sunday (14th), with athletics.




In this Saturday’s race (13th), Arthur swam the 100 backstroke in a time of 1’01’44, reaching a pace of 1’01’62. However, the score obtained at the Paralympic Meeting is not valid for classification for the Paris-2024 Paralympic Games. The young swimmer will then have to repeat the feat on one of the two occasions that will serve as official selections for this sport: the International Swimming Open, from 2 to 4 May, and the First National Phase of the Loterias Caixa. Circuit, which takes place from the 16th to the 18th of the same month.

“I had no idea that I could be at this level to have the chance to compete in a Paralympic Games. Going to Paris. I haven’t figured it out yet, but I think it’s all very nice. Having the chance to travel to another country “said Arthur Xavier, just 17 years old. He was an Olympic athlete until 2019, when he was diagnosed with intellectual disability. Today the young man trains at the CPB Reference Center, in Belo Horizonte, which operates at the Federal University of Minas Gerais.

“I evolved a lot after the pandemic. Now I’m achieving great results. That’s it [no Meeting] it was to have more confidence. It was to feel that we were on the right path. I prefer the 100m freestyle, but the 100m backstroke is the one that gave me the best marks and could take me to Paris,” added the athlete.

Highlights in weightlifting

In weightlifting, Marco Túlio de Cruz of Minas Gerais, in the category up to 49 kg, improved his score compared to last year’s ranking, in which he finished leader with 155 kg, and lifted 157 kg on his third attempt this Saturday (13). Among the women, the big clash of the day was between the weightlifters over 86 kg: Tayana de Medeiros and Edilândia Araújo. The former won the competition by lifting 142 kg, while the latter won the silver medal, with 130 kg.

In turn, Paralympian and world medalist Izabela Campos participated in athletics. The athlete from the F11 class (blind) won the shot put duels, with a score of 10.32 m, and the discus throw, with a score of 36.65 m. She the latter had a technical index of 94.16% and narrowly missed her own national record, of 40.12 million, set last month.
