The provisional measure signed by Lula this week will favor a further increase in electricity tariffs
Summary
The temporary measure approved by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva aims to reduce the value of the electricity bill, however it has been subject to criticism from experts who indicate that it will have the opposite effect: an increase in tariffs for consumers. But you can save on your energy bill by following some simple tips.
The provisional measure approved on the 9th by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whose main objective is to reduce the value of the electricity bill, is criticized by experts who highlight details that could lead to the opposite effect: a possible increase in tariffs for consumers.
Juliano Gonçalves, electrical engineer and director of Megger’s cable division in Brazil, explains in general terms why a rebound effect exists.
“The passed Parliament includes measures that extend the deadline for renewable energy installations, such as solar and wind, to receive full subsidies on wire tariffs,” he explains. “This tariff represents the amount paid by plants to use the country’s energy transmission network. Currently these sources are incentivized with government discounts for their lower environmental impact, paid for by all consumers through energy tariffs.”
“Brazil already produces enough energy to supply its population, which means that the deadline set in the interim measure for energy production unnecessarily stimulates the production of renewable energy,” says Juliano.
“Energy demand and the growth in consumption of these renewable sources have not worked as expected, despite investments and now the trend towards energy surplus becomes even more palpable.”
Resource targeting
The federal government, however, is still looking for ways to carry out planning and reduce energy bills by 3.5% and, for this purpose, plans to use the advances provided for by the law on the privatization of Eletrobras, resources that will be allocated to payment of the “Covid bill”, which covers the extra costs of energy distributors during the pandemic, and the “water scarcity bill”, which settles the bills left outstanding due to the lack of rain from 2020 to 2022, when the companies of the sector had to pay for higher value-added energy.
Until the discount arrives on the electricity bill – if it arrives – some habits can be part of the consumer’s daily life to save money at the end of the month in an eco-friendly way. Juliano indicates five.
• Consciously electric shower: One of the easiest ways to save energy is to use your electric shower in summer mode instead of winter mode. “The electric shower alone can cause an increase of at least 25% on the electricity bill, because it is one of the most powerful appliances in the home,” explains Juliano.
• Sustainable consumption of the electric tap: Following the same reasoning as the shower, even the electric tap, if always used in summer mode, can save on the electricity bill.
• Conscientious use of air conditioning and heating: Avoid leaving the air conditioning or heating on for long periods when you are not at home and when you are, adjust the temperature to a comfortable level, but turn it off when you no longer feel bothered by the cold or heat. To save even more money, prioritize using curtains and blinds to control room temperatures.
• Natural drying of clothes: Dryer? When you’re in a hurry, maybe. Use natural drying outdoors, using clotheslines on the ceiling and floor whenever possible. This will reduce the use of the dryer, which consumes a lot of energy.
• Ethical use of the iron: Letting the clothes pile up to be ironed all at once is also a good option, as the iron is one of the largest consumers of electricity and the energy consumption will be less due to the frequency. If the iron has the “less consumption” option, that is also an option.
• Fry, cook or bake responsibly: When using microwaves, air fryers and electric ovens, choose the correct temperature and unplug them after use.
“For those looking to reduce expenses, using these simple practices in everyday life can result in significant long-term savings,” concludes Juliano.
