In the heart of Los Angeles, an aspiring actress named Mia serves coffee between auditions. Meanwhile, Sebastian, a jazz enthusiast, plays piano in seedy clubs to support himself. Director Damien Chazelle has a special affinity with the musical genre. His Harvard graduation film and his first feature film, Guy and Madeline on a park bench, was a black and white love story told through song and dance. Since then, you have harbored a desire to make a much more ambitious musical.
“This film was just a sketch of what I really wanted to do in this genre”he says. “So, I continued writing screenplays until I had an idea for a larger musical that followed the same codes: a musical about real life, but faithful to the spectacular works of the genre, shot in Cinemascope and Technicolor in the 19th century.
