Their arrival on the platform created a cinematic event, but now it’s time to say goodbye to them. Three François Truffaut films offered on Netflix will leave the streaming service’s catalog in the coming days, including the French filmmaker’s first work: Les Quatre Cents Coups.
new wave
This first feature film, released in 1959, is considered one of the origins of the New Wave. This cinematic movement refers to films from the late 1950s by Cahiers du cinéma critics who went on to direct: François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette and even Eric Rohmer.
These filmmakers’ films were made against a film form that was considered too classical and campaigned for a more literary and realistic approach to cinematography. These films were mostly shot on location and featured original and innovative narratives.
Inspired by his own childhood, Les Quatre Cents Coups allowed François Truffaut to find his cinematic double in the person of Jean-Pierre Leo. This first masterpiece was a major success upon its release and was notably awarded the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Tragic and melancholic love
Also available on Netflix, Jules et Jim is perhaps the most radical work in his filmography. This adaptation of Henri-Pierre Roche’s novel of the same name (from which he later adapted Les Deux Anglaises et le continent) depicts an impossible love between a woman (Jeanne Moreau) and two men.
A tragic love story, Jules and Jimmy is full of magical moments that have made the film a part of cinema legend. The most famous sequence is definitely the song Whirlwind Zhanna Moreau sang.
We should also mention the exceptional music by Georges Delerui (official composer of Truffaut and New Wave cinematography), which brings the film all its tragic and melancholic dimension. Jules and Jimmy certainly marks their most successful collaboration, if not their most famous.
François Truffaut’s final masterpiece
François Truffaut’s third film, available on Netflix, explores another facet of his career. This last feature film called The Last Metro is sometimes considered the undisputed masterpiece of the filmmaker. Awarded ten Césars (a record shared with Cyrano de Bergerac), this film tells the story of theater in Paris during the occupation.
The Last Metro dispenses with a more classic form of François Truffaut cinema. Like Les Quatre Cents Coups, the film is inspired by the filmmaker’s childhood memories and loosely adapts the life of the dancer Miss Bluebell as well as Jean Renoir’s play Carolla.
These three films represent different defining eras in director Francois Truffaut’s filmography. A legendary filmmaker, still considered one of the greatest directors of French cinema, the latter continues to inspire a new generation of artists, both for the quality of his films and for a variety of film lovers.
four hundred strokes, Jules and Jimmy and Last subway It will leave the catalog of films on Netflix on April 23.
