Aftersun’s big adventure that took him to the Oscars began here in 2022. And some of the most famous French films of 2023 (The Rapture, Vincent Must Die, Ama Gloria, The Syndrome of Past Loves) were part of the final selection. Just like Gerard’s future winner, Korean Sleep.
For 63 years now, Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival has given young filmmakers the opportunity to step into the spotlight by selecting their first or second feature films.
So much so that professionals and spectators closely follow this parallel stretch from which several gems emerge, including Tiger Stripes, the big winner of the 2023 edition.
After Audrey Divan, the Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen will lead the jury. Together with French producer Sylvie Pialat, Rwandan actress Eliane Umuhire, Belgian cinematographer Virginie Surdej and Canadian film critic Ben Kroll.
A quintet responsible for presenting four awards (Leitz Cine Discovery Prize for Best Short Film, Louis Roederer Foundation Prize for Revelation, French Touch Jury Prize and Critics’ Week Grand Prize) to thirteen shorts and eleven feature films selected by the Critics’ Week Selection. A committee chaired by its delegate-general, Ava Kahen.
The team had to choose between 1,050 feature films and 2,150 short films to arrive at this list, which was tempting to say the least.
