Disney+ may soon have live channels

With the aim of maintaining its customers (and acquiring new ones), the Disney+ is considering adding live programming to streaming soon.

To do this, the streamer must leverage successful Disney franchises, such as Star Wars and Marvel, to create channels with related content 24 hours a day, seven days a week, a formula used by TV for decades and, currently, by other platforms streaming (more information below).

The information was obtained exclusively from The information. So far, however, Disney has not commented on the matter.

Live channels on Disney+?

As already mentioned, the strategy, although not official, is similar to what we find in other streaming channels, such as The Roku Channel, Pluto TV, Tubi and Samsung TV Plus, which work with a mix of live and streaming channels, with the difference is that many of them do not charge for their services, but rather support themselves through advertising presented during live programming.

Furthermore, Disney’s proposal aims to attract more subscribers, given that the platform is in financial decline. In the final quarter of 2022, Disney’s entertainment revenue fell 7%, trailing Netflix and Max, among others.

Recall that Disney is about to unify Disney+ and Star+ under a single platform, which will maintain the Disney+ name, but with content from Star+ and ESPN.

It is possible that this merger will also help the company attract more subscribers, including those who have Star+ and who would have liked to have Disney+, but did not give the high price (at least in Brazil).
