On the verge of turning 40, the feature film ‘A Hora da Estrela’, by Suzana Amaral, returns to cinemas on May 16, in digital copies.

The film adapted from the book of the same name by Clarice Lispector, one of the author’s best-selling and revered books, is a classic of national cinema and tells the story of young Macabéa (Marcélia Cartaxo), a typist from the north-east who finds a boyfriend and dreams of happiness.


After losing an aunt, her only connection to the world, she goes to Rio de Janeiro, where she rents a room, works as a typist and spends the hours listening to Rádio Relógio. She then falls in love with Olímpico de Jesus (José Dumont), a metalworker from the Northeast, who soon cheats on her with a colleague.

Desperate, Macabéa consults a fortune teller (Fernanda Montenegro, in the role of Madame Cartola) who predicts a bright future different from the one that awaits her.




The film was named by the Brazilian Association of Film Critics (Abraccine) as one of the 100 best Brazilian films of all time, winning the Silver Bear for best actress at the Berlin Film Festival in 1985, the year in which it also won the Brasilia Film Festival Award in six categories: best film, best editing (Idê Lacreta), best cinematography (Edgar Moura), best actress and best actor.

The Hour of the Star He was also chosen by Embrafilme to represent Brazil at the Oscar for best foreign film, in the 1986 edition.

The digitization of the work was carried out in Rio de Janeiro, under the care of Débora Butruce, curator and director of historical films, in a project sponsored by Petrobras.

“THE PETROBRAS VITRINE SESSION saves the memory of the national audiovisual sector and promotes the formation of a cinematographic culture based on Brazilian references, an essential action for the valorization of our cinema”, explains Silvia Cruz, creator of the project and founding member of Vitrine Filmes .
