The production of plastic products contributes to ocean pollution, adding 23 to 37 million tons of waste per year
Plastic production is expected to triple by 2060 and contribute to pollution. The alarm comes from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which highlights on page 15 of the report “From pollution to solution – a global assessment of marine litter and plastic pollution” – From pollution to solution – a global assessment of marine litter and plastic pollution, in Portuguese – that, with global cumulative plastic production between 1950 and 2050, production is expected to reach 34 million tonnes, generating waste flows into the environment.
According to UNEP, two-thirds of plastic products have a short lifespan and are quickly discarded. In 2021 alone, 139 million tons of plastic waste were generated, according to the report. The document also reports, on the same page, the breakdown of plastic pollution in the oceans, estimated between 75 and 199 million tons. By 2040, this projection could triple, from 23 to 37 million tons per year.
In turn, the United Nations (UN) document “Turn off the tap – How the world can end plastic pollution and create a circular economy” – Turn off the tap – How the world can end plastic pollution plastic and create a circular economy in Portuguese – on page 14highlights that taking measures, such as reuse, can be a two-way street, as it accelerates the plastic recycling market, ensuring this initiative becomes a more profitable venture, and reduces the amount of plastic pollution by a additional 20% until 2040.
For the founder and general director of the Latin American Institute of Quality (LAQI), Daniel Maximilian Da Costa, based on the publication “Report Quality Festival 2023”, on page 14in addition to attention to plastic pollution, the implementation and support of initiatives need to be a constant observation in the business world.
“There are several actions that respond to this theme, especially this April 22nd, when World Planet Earth Day is celebrated. I reinforce the need for initiatives related to the energy transition as a driver of sustainable development, since it is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals ( SDG). The corporate sphere increasingly needs to be connected to this vision”, he underlines.
