Fans of ‘Romy and Michele’ are in luck. In an interview with TODAY on Wednesday, Mira Sorvino has given details about a possible sequel to that comedy released in 1997.
“There is nothing official to report, but off the record I can hint that we are closer than ever to making something happen.Sorvino told the show’s hosts, Jenna Bush Hager and Michelle Buteau. The actress added, “Every time I would show up, I’d say, ‘Come on, please, let’s do something,’ and now I’m like, ‘Okay, okay. okay, we’re getting close.’ I’m so excited”. “I can’t say anything, but something might be in the works!” stated the actress.
Sorvino co-starred in the cult comedy classic opposite Lisa Kudrow, playing a pair of wonderful best friends who plan to dominate their high school reunion ten years after graduating.
Earlier this year, the former ‘Friends’ star also gave her thoughts on a sequel in an interview. As she responded to a caller’s question about a possible comeback, Kudrow said the original film’s screenwriter, Robin Schiff, “has definitely been approached to start thinking about a sequel.”. The host then asked if she and Sorvino would be open to the new movie “if the script comes out right.” “Yes. I think it could be fun.Kudrow replied.
The story celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, and its protagonists commemorated it at the SAG Awards. Interest in the couple recently reignited after the two actresses met onstage at the awards. On the stage, Kudrow and Sorvino referenced their iconic looks from the film with suit jackets matching the dresses they wore in the plot: Kudrow in a pink suit and Sorvino in blue.
