Botafogo won for the first time in the Libertadores group stage and are back in the fight for a place in the round of 16. After obtaining a sequence of three positive results in front of Glorioso, after the 3-1 against Universitario this Wednesday (24th), coach Artur Jorge said he was satisfied with his team’s performance.
“I don’t see (the victory) as a relief, but rather as a consequence of the work. Together we played an interesting match. It was a consequence of the athletes’ good play, in a difficult match. It was important to win to be included in the accounts of this Libertadores group”, he began.
Glorioso had lost their first two matches and, therefore, their Group D rivals fell further away in the standings. Therefore, the match against the Peruvians was decisive for the team to continue with a chance of qualification. Doing his homework at Nilton Santos, in the third round of the continental competition, Alvinegro got the key wrong.
“We had a false start in the group stage and it was important to win today (Wednesday). Therefore, I am very happy to win my first match with the Libertadores in a year in which I won Champions League matches. From a personal, it’s extraordinary. But the important thing at that moment was to have won the three points in an honest way. It wasn’t a victory in itself. We had a good performance and we were clearly superior.”
Artur Jorge ‘feels’ the play from the edge of the pitch
