After the box office success of the two ‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey’ movies, now comes Mickey Mouse’s turn to star in his own horror story.
They are preparing a horror movie starring Mickey Mouse
The 1928 version of Mickey Mouse is already part of the public domain as of 2024, so studios other than Walt Disney Pictures will be able to use the character in question without having to pay royalties or face a copyright lawsuit.
The first to pay attention to this character were the producers of horror films, who will work on the first film of this genre starring Mickey.
‘The Grinch’ Horror Director Directs New Mickey Mouse Movie
According to Variety, Steven LaMorte will direct a horror-comedy film titled ‘Screamboat’, based on Mickey’s animated debut. In this twisted version, a sadistic mouse will torture a group of unsuspecting Ferry passengers.
LaMorte, known for his Grinch horror parody “The Mean One,” is excited about this project.
LaMorte emphasizes that his goal is not to destroy the character, as has been reported on social media, but to explore them from a new and exciting perspective.
Remember that Disney lost the copyright to “Steamboat Willie” (Mickey Mouse on a boat in black and white) along with the original versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. However, it still retains the copyright for the most well-known and modern versions of these characters. The company has said it will also vigorously defend its trademarks.
The new horror film will not use any iconic Disney characters, it will just be Mickey on board, so the producers are taking legal advice to ensure they are not breaking the law by referring to the character as ‘Steamboat Willie’.
“Screamboat” will hit theaters in 2025, while “Mickeys” Mouse Trap, directed by Jamie Bailey, could hit theaters earlier, as it appears to have already been shot and the trailer was released in early 2024.
Will you see the new horror movies based on the Mickey Mouse character?
