In 1954, Marshal Teddy Daniels and his teammate Chuck Auley are sent to investigate Shatter Island, a mental hospital where dangerous criminals are interned. One of the patients, Rachel Solando, has inexplicably disappeared. How was the killer able to get out of the locked cell from the outside? The only clue found in the room is a sheet of paper on which we can read numbers and letters with no apparent meaning. Consistent work of the patient, or a cryptogram?
A film that turns the brain
This is the synopsis of this thriller that was released on our screens in 2010. Since then, Shutter Island has gone down in history as one of the best films of the Martin Scorsese/Leonardo DiCaprio duo. It must be said that this adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s award-winning novel, which also includes Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River, offers excellent staging and impeccable acting (starring DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo).
But if the feature film was popular – and if it continues to be talked about today – it is because of its narrative framework and its final revelation that it turns the brain. In case you haven’t seen Shutter Island yet, we’ll withhold those revelations from you. But on the other hand, if you already know the twist, know that Martin Scorsese and his screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis deliberately made visual and script mistakes to get us on the right track. So this is your chance to see it one more time before it leaves Netflix for good.
Is Shutter Island based on a true story?
If Martin Scorsese likes to draw inspiration from reality in his films, Shutter Island is not based on a true story at all. On the other hand, the feature film was shot in a real mental hospital in Massachusetts.
Medfield Insane Asylum, now called Medfield State Hospital, opened its doors in 1892 and welcomed patients until 2003. This institution, designed like a cottage, has a peculiarity: its leaders wanted to try a new method of treatment. The people sent there were not locked in a cell, but lived in a micro-community: each one had a special task.
It is now possible to visit the Shutter Island filming location. There was even a drive-in screening in 2020, on the 10th anniversary of the film. The hospital is still used for other filming, such as Knives Out (2019) and The New Mutants (2020).
Shutter Island Leaving Netflix on April 30th.
