Fortaleza beats Boca Juniors and secures leadership in the South American championship


With two goals from Lucero and two from Yago Pikachu, Fortaleza beat Boca Juniors 4-2 and secured the lead in Group D of the Copa Sudamericano




Fortaleza hosted Boca Juniors, this Thursday (25th), at the Arena Castelão, for the match valid for the third round of the Copa Sudamericano. On a glorious night from Pochettino, who provided three assists, Fortaleza defeated Boca Juniors 4-2, with two goals from Lucero and two from Pikachu, ensuring they remained top of Group D and maintaining their three-year drought. THE GAME

Boca starts to press, but Fortaleza doesn’t take long to dominate. Fortaleza returned in the second half, dictating the pace and betting on the speed of the attack. Tricolor de Aço’s attacks were effective and guaranteed the comeback against Boca. After a free kick from Pochettino, in a proven play, Lucero headed it and the ball ended up in the bottom corner of Romero’s net, scoring the second goal and turning the score around for Fortaleza, in the 51st minute. Without losing speed, Fortaleza increased the result shortly after. Alone in attack, Yago Pikachu receives a pass from Pochettino, brings the ball into the area, takes advantage of the corner and finishes, scoring Laion’s third goal, in the 55th minute.

Despite the advantage, trying to equalize the match, in the 59th minute, Boca Juniors dangerously arrives in the Tricolore area, but Pedro Augusto saves, bringing the ball to the back line. Boca Juniors also tried to create and threaten the flag again, but Fortaleza’s defense organized itself and blocked Xeneize’s opportunities. Giving the fans a good game, Fortaleza’s fourth goal came after an individual move by Machuca, the Argentinian crossed for Pikachu, who pushed with his chest and found the net once again, in the 63rd minute.

In the final phase, Boca Juniors attacked again and almost recovered in the 83rd minute, but the ball hit João Ricardo’s post. In the next minute Fortaleza looks for another dangerous ball, but Romero saves it. Behind in the standings, the Argentine team remained persistent and managed to reduce the deficit. In the 85th minute, from outside the area, Zenón shoots hard and scores Boca Juniors’ second goal.

The match ended in a draw. Without new goals, Fortaleza beat Boca Juniors 4-2, guaranteeing themselves the leadership of Group D, with nine points won. In addition to the score in the standings, the Italian triumph contributed to maintaining Boca’s three-year drought against Brazilian teams.

Fortaleza returns to the field next Sunday (28th), at 6.30pm (Brasilia time), against Red Bull Bragantino, at Arena Castelão, in the fourth round of the Brazilian Championship. Boca Juniors will visit Estudiantes, in a match valid for the semifinal of the first phase of the Argentine Championship, on Tuesday (30th), at 8pm (Brasilia time), at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium.
