With 1,953,363 admissions, Cocorico is one of the biggest hits of 2024 in French cinema! The film is the exact No. 2 at the box office in 2024, behind Dune 2 and ahead of Bob Marley’s One Love. The comedy is still playing in a handful of theaters, but if that’s not the case near you, good news, it’ll be available on VOD, DVD and Blu-ray very soon. Release date is June 14, 2024 on M6 Video.
A unique tandem in cinema
Christian Clavier + Didier Bourdon + Le Touche = Cocorico! This comedy, written and directed by Julien Hervé (ex-writer of Guignol, co-writer of the Tuche saga and the last installment of Asterix), reunites the two actors Didier Bourdon and Christian Clavier for the first time.
Bourdon and Clavier answered each other in the theater Crazy Cage and replaced each other in the cinema (Clavier plays Couture in Les Profs, and Bourdon plays the role in the sequel). But the two kings of French comedy have never shared the bill in the same film before. This first showdown, which is sure to shine, can be seen in theaters this Wednesday.
Quiz – Didier Bourdon or Christian Clavier? Who plays in this movie?
What is it about?
About to get married, Alice and Francois decide to unite their two families. For this occasion, they have an original gift for parents: DNA tests so that everyone can discover the origin of their ancestors. But the surprise turns into a fiasco when the large aristocratic family the Bouvier-Sauvages and the much more humble Martins discover the results are, to say the least… unexpected!
One of the powerful scenes of the film takes place in the basement of the prison, where the story unfolds. This closed moment provides an opportunity for a handoff between the two actors. “Each of them brought a lot to me, in ideas, in the construction of characters, I was really lucky to work with both of them.” highlights director and screenwriter Julien Hervé in the press suite.
and added: “Then, frankly, you don’t have much control over these great actors: they’re ready, they’re fair, and they have invaluable experience, which means they know perfectly well what to do. The clavier and the bourdon are war machines…”
“You suddenly feel the pressure on your shoulders with the idea of leading this tandem. This is my first movie, almost scary! They are two professionals and I have never had such a feeling on set. But I admit that in my head it was a bit like strangers in the face of brilliance, and that’s no small thing!“
“You’re not what you think you are!”
Like a comedy like What Shall We Do with the Good Lord?, this film fully plays on contrasts and opposite social origins.
“There are undoubtedly personal, but quite universal things that can be felt by not everyone in the social complex. This is the fish-out-of-the-aquarium principle that we also encounter in “Les Tuche”, even if they don’t experience it! What interests me at first is what the characters say: You are not who you think you are. Then I see their reaction by forcing the line a little by choosing characters that were completely opposite in the beginning! Christian Clavier and Didier Bourdon play people who are certainly very French, but not on the same level on the social scale. They have something in common, but above all huge differences. It was interesting to confront all this also with a passion for what I call “fake cool”. (…)
He follows: “I laugh at the conflation of this world with the world of another couple who are obviously less spoiled by life and to whom we say “maybe you’re not so low on the social scale after all” and who in turn become a snob in two seconds… it’s human nature and I laugh.”
The film’s humor also deals with clichés associated with certain nationalities, for example, the Portuguese, the Germans, without forgetting the British.
The Clavier-Bourdon tandem is surrounded by Marian Denikur and Sylvie Testud. Also note the small role of Patrick Prejean, who we would love to see on screen.
After success, further works?
Does the team have any ideas for a sequel? Admittedly, Kokoriko’s final scene suggests that anything is possible… the ending is completely open-ended and even ends on a cliffhanger of sorts, as the series would say.
“When I wrote the second version of the script, Christian Clavier gave me this advice: when in doubt, do an open ending. He is a professional!“, director and screenwriter Julien Hervé explained to Le Parisien. It’s not for me to decide, primarily for the community, but we’ve left it open.”
“Cult”, “Wonder”: rating 4.1 out of 5, this is the best comedy with Christian Clavier
However, according to Le Parisien, the first part of the film could also produce a theatrical adaptation in the form of a closed session. This part is really reminiscent of a plot like The First Name, with increasing suspense and lots of humor.
Cocorico will be released on VOD, DVD and Blu-ray on June 14, 2024.
