The market value survey places rivals on greater parity
The sale of Botafogo football to John Textor represented a turning point in the rivalry between Flamengo and Botafogo. The teams will face each other this Sunday (28), at 11am (Brasilia time), at the Maracanã, with the smallest technical difference between them in the last four years, according to a survey carried out by “Bolavip Brasil”.
The data refers to the evolution of the market values of rival teams over the last ten seasons. The higher the value, a sign of a stronger group of players serving the clubs. Historic adversaries, they have experienced moments of distance and closeness over the decade, as revealed by the analysis of the data made available by the specialized site “Transfermarkt”.
Equilibrium time
Between 2015 and 2018 the opponents had similar squads in terms of quality. The largest difference in market values between them was R$336 million, in 2017. This was directly reflected on the field. In the period there were six victories for Flamengo, five draws and four victories for Botafogo in head-to-head matches.
In terms of titles, Rio’s rivals remained strictly equal. The Rossoneri team was champion of Rio de Janeiro in 2017; l’alvinegro, in 2018.
Flamengo’s Guadalupe
The scenario changed abruptly with the start of president Rodolfo Landim’s tenure at Flamengo. From 2019 onwards, while Rossoneri football made a leap in quality, Botafogo football remained stagnant, or rather got worse. The peak of the technical disparity between the two teams occurred in 2021, when the market value of the Rossoneri team was a good R$898 million higher than that of General Severiano’s team.
At the time, Flamengo were two-time Brazilian champions and Botafogo was in Série B. Between 2019 and 2021, the technical disparity was evident in the classics: in seven classics, there were six victories and one draw for Flamengo.
Recovery of Botafogo
At the end of 2021, news emerged that Botafogo had reached an agreement with North American entrepreneur John Textor for the sale of 90% of the shares of Sociedade Anônima de Futebol (SAF). It would be the beginning of the process of reducing the gap compared to its biggest rival. Since then, the market value of the Botafogo team has increased by up to 300%.
This Sunday, the teams face each other in the Brazilian Championship with a difference in market value of R$ 473 million, almost half of that of 2021. All thanks to Botafogo’s significant increase in investment, while Flamengo maintains its high level stable investment in recent years.
From 2022 to today, Botafogo has finally returned to worry Flamengo in direct clashes: in seven matches there have been five victories for the Rossoneri and two for the Bianconeri.
Market dispute
The recovery of Botafogo football has also been reflected in market movements. So the two opponents began to want the same players. At the height of the technical disparity between the teams, Flamengo even invested R$275 million in one window, with the black and white team having no resources for signings.
Currently the scenario is more balanced. In the last transfer window, both teams tried to sign striker Luiz Henrique, then at Betis (ESP). Botafogo came out on top. By concluding a deal worth R$107 million, he guaranteed a reinforcement and, above all, signed the largest purchase in the history of Brazilian football, a brand that belonged to Flamengo, when he signed Gerson for R$92 million, in 2023.
