Fans of gruesome stories, true crimes and other horror stories be warned, Netflix has just released a new mini-series online that will give you a cold sweat. Straight from Spain, The Asunta Affair looks back at one of the most brutal cases to ever take place in the Iberian country.
In six episodes, the fiction created by Ramon Campos, one of the co-creators of Les Demoiselles du phone, returns to this disgusting story that shook all of Spain. We have to go back to 2013, September 21 to be precise, the date of the beginning of the events and the starting point of the series.
The hidden side of a falsely perfect family
That day, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Bastera reported the disappearance of their daughter Assunta to the authorities. A few hours later, Assunta’s body was found on a road near Santiago de Compostela.
It turned out that their daughter, the first Chinese child adopted in Galicia, was then twelve years old, kidnapped and strangled with a rope. So, Assunta was indeed killed, but by whom?
A police investigation quickly reveals that Rosario, a lawyer, and Alfonso, a journalist, who make up a very wealthy couple, may be the perpetrators of the crime. Beyond the city, the news shocked the entire country, extremely shocked by these revelations.
How can parents kill their own daughter? What is hidden behind the image of an ideal family, which the couple conveys well in every way?

You’ll have to watch the mini-series The Asunta Affair to find out about the creatures in this horrifying story that reveal dark secrets. Each episode returns to a key date in the case, interspersed with flashbacks, until the finale, which depicts the trial of Assunta’s two parents.
The latter is played by two Spanish stars, Candela Peña, seen in All About My Mother or the series Hiero, and Tristan Ulloa, seen in The Warrior Nun and Berlin, a spin-off of La Casa de Papel. Young Iris Wu plays poor little Assunta.
Although The Asunta Affair is based on true events, the Netflix series took some liberties with the plot and protagonists by inventing the plot. But the essence of the matter is clearly respected and your heart will sink in front of this fantasy.
The mini-series “The Case of Assunta” is available on Netflix.
