Test camera | Will the Galaxy A54 still be able to compete in 2024?

Can the middle man with the best camera of 2023, the Galaxy A54, still compete with this year’s models?

OR Galaxy A54 was the best mid-range camera last year, but can it still compete with the models launched this year? His successor, the A55 Galaxyand models from other brands, such as Realme 12 ProPlushave significantly raised the standard for photography and video recording in 2024, so we decided to review the A54’s camera to find out if the device can still compete in this scenario.

How were the tests carried out?

We tested the Galaxy A54’s main camera in two scenarios, one external, with only ambient light, and the other internal, with controlled lighting, to see how the device handles different light conditions.

The video itself was created directly from the applications Instagram Comes from Tick tockas well as in Software of the device’s cameras, in Full HD resolution at 30 frames per second (fps). Finally, we created a horizontal video, especially for Youtube.

Our FreeGameGuide photographer, Ivo Meneghel Jr., analyzed every detail of the videos and photos to answer whether it’s worth saving time by recording and photographing directly from social media, or whether it’s better to focus on image quality.

Galaxy A54 camera specifications

  • Principal: 50 MP, f/1.8, 1/1.56, PDAF, OIS, 1 µm;
  • Ultrawide: 12 MP, f/2.2, 123º, 1.12 µm;
  • Macros: 5MP, f/2.4;
  • In front of: 32 MP, f/2.2, 26 mm, 1/2.8″, 0.8 µm;

Videos with the Galaxy A54 for social media

Starting from outdoor videos, we noticed that the device camera directly from the Instagram app has an advantage over TikTok due to the higher level of detail. The Chinese social network applies a very strong softening filter to the face, leaving the appearance very superficial.

This smoothing is very common in applications and even mobile phones from Chinese companies: i Xiaomi, for example, usually does this. It is also worth mentioning that Samsung has a partnership with Objective to increase the quality of your devices on the social network, as is clear in the example.

Recording directly from Samsung’s native camera app is clearly better than from the two social networks. According to our photographer, it continues to be the best option to have an image quality closer to reality, even with the compression already carried out by the platforms.

In indoor environments, with controlled lights and scenography, the same thing is repeated: Instagram has more details than TikTok, which maintains the softening filter on the face. This is a shame because, at least in this scenario, the colors in the video are very interesting.

Here, the difference between the Instagram app and the Galaxy A54’s native camera is much smaller, little in the way of shadows and textures. If you want a little more convenience you can use the device directly from the social network and the quality should be similar.

The Galaxy A54 is also a great option for recording videos for YouTube. In the video below, we filmed in a controlled horizontal environment, with long duration in mind, and we really liked the result.

If it were on a tripod it would certainly be possible to get good shots without major problems. Our photographer Ivo commented that he would only record in 4K at 30 fps, to have more definition, and perhaps add some corrections to the editing.

Stories with the front camera of the Galaxy A54 also turn out very similar to the image quality of the native camera. We noticed a slight loss of definition as expected due to Instagram compression, but the final balance is still excellent.

Photos taken with the Galaxy A54

The Galaxy A54’s rear cameras are so good for photos that they were very close to that Galaxy S23 in our comparison carried out by product analyst Felipe Junqueira. In general, we have great things dynamic range (HDR)very accurate colors and a very strong background blur.

Our photographer carried out a test in the park using the Galaxy A54 in automatic mode, to check its performance in different scenarios. As you can see in the gallery below, the device generally performs well, but can overdo the saturation a bit.

This feature was quite common in Samsung devices, nice or not depending on the intention of the image. Although it attracts a lot of attention on social media, the colors are a little out of touch with reality.

Portraits of people are still great too, but as Ivo pointed out, it might be better to use manual mode than automatic. In our tests the smartphone suffered a bit in the exposure of photographs, leaving them very dark.

Is it still worth spending photos and videos with the Galaxy A54?

The Galaxy A54 remains one of the best mid-range photo smartphones on the market. Now that its successor has been launched, its price has varied considerably, fluctuating between R$ 1,500 and R$ 2,000.

If you can find it for around R$500 less than the A55, it’s worth buying if you want to focus on photography. Whether it’s stories or short and long videos, it’s still a good option. For slightly more elaborate photos, other than night shots, it may be better to purchase a more advanced device.
