Five years after Jon Favreau’s The Lion King, Disney is releasing Mufasa, a prequel centered around Simba’s father’s youth.
Directed by Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins, the feature film is written by Jeff Nathanson, who is already working on the 2019 film and features flashbacks. Mufasa’s story is told to Kiara – daughter of Simba and Nala – by Rafik, Timon and Pumbaa.
We also hear the voice of John Kanye returning with Rafiq’s vocal role in the trailer released today. The video allows us to explore the world of the feature film and confirms what the excerpt shown in 2022’s D23 suggests: Mufasa is not a direct descendant of Ahad, and thus is not Scar’s brother. A detail that allows us to better understand why Scar is so jealous of Mufasa.
At the launch of his movie in 2022, Barry Jenkins confides in us that his Mufasa will have the same energy as his illustrious predecessor. “He is different from the Lion King, but will have the same energy. Mufasa tells us how Simba’s father became king. His story is told from his childhood to the birth of his son.
In the original movie, Mufasa represents greatness. We admire his royalty, his leadership. We think he has it all because he was born good… but in this prequel we explore how his friends and family made him who he is. We discover his journey. Mufasa means a lot to me and I think it’s a movie that kids and their parents who grew up with the Disney classic will enjoy watching.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter’s first film role
As for the original voice cast, Aaron Pierre voices Mufasa, Calvin Harrison Jr. is Scar, Penny Johnson Gerald doubles as Sarafina, Seth Rogen takes on the role of Pumbaa, and Billy Eichner voices Timon and John Cahn again. Rafiki.
Today we find out that Mads Mikkelsen and Thandiwe Newton are joining the adventure and that Donald Glover (adult Simba) and Beyoncé (who already voiced Nala in 2019’s The Lion King) are back. Blue Ivy Carter, daughter of Jay-Z and Beyoncé, will also be an original voice contributor. Blue Ivy should logically outshine young Kiara, Nala and Simba’s daughter.
After Moana, Encanto and the live version of The Little Mermaid, Lin-Manuel Miranda will be responsible for writing the new songs for Mufasa: The Lion King.
Released 25 years after the animated film by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, the remake Jon Favreau It grossed $1.6 billion at the international box office, ranking seventh in the top 10 biggest hits of all time. Will Mufa do the same?
