The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), declared this Thursday that “many more deaths” will be recorded in the state due to the intense rains, stating that it is the worst climate disaster ever to occur in the RS.
Leite’s statement came during an emergency meeting attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in Santa Maria, in the south of the state.
According to the latest report from the Civil Protection of Rio Grande do Sul, extreme weather events in the region have already caused 13 victims, with 21 missing and over 5,300 displaced.
