Borussia Dortmund idol Marco Reus will leave the German club at the end of the season

Borussia Dortmund midfielder and idol Marco Reus will leave the German club at the end of this season after both reached a mutual agreement not to extend his contract, the player said on Friday.

The 34-year-old athlete, who joined the club in 2012, where he had already spent a decade in the youth team, scored 168 goals in 424 games for Dortmund, as well as providing 128 assists.

Known for his skill, goal-scoring ability and intelligence on the pitch, Reus captained the team for five years until 2023.

He won two German Cups but failed to win any other major titles, agonizingly missing out on what would have been his first Bundesliga trophy last season.

Reus can still cap his final season at the club with the continent’s biggest title, as Dortmund are in the semi-finals of the Champions League, having beaten Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the first leg this week.

“The club and I have decided not to extend the contract,” Reus said in a video. “I have spent more than half my life at this club. I am proud and happy to have played here for so many years. I am speechless.”

“It’s important that you fans know this first, because we still have a big goal. We want to go to Wembley (the stadium of the Champions League final) and bring the trophy back to Dortmund.”

The team will travel to France for the second leg on Tuesday, hoping to reach the final of the tournament for the first time since 2013. Dortmund won the trophy in 1997.

The team is currently fifth in the Bundesliga with three matches remaining in the league.
