The eighth season of “The Flash” ended this Wednesday (29/6) in the United States, but a question that does not want to remain silent remains in the air: why has Candice Patton been absent in four consecutive episodes?

In narrative terms, the absence of the character Iris made no sense, particularly during the team’s attempts to ineffectively track her down. Nor is it clear how she unexpectedly returns to the side of her husband, Barry / Flash (Grant Gustin).

Thursday night (30/6), Patton finally explained what happened via Instagram. He has published a text in which he reveals that his seasonal contract was meant to protect her, in the event that the borders between Canada and the United States are closed due to the pandemic.

The actress said the “Arrowverse” series will suffer from restrictions imposed during the global Covid-19 pandemic, “making it extremely difficult – if not impossible – to return home.”

Patton also said that she and her team have made it clear that if the pandemic situation “remains upbeat”, “she would be happy to appear in every episode.”

The borders were not closed, but the producers decided to keep its presence reduced. “And we respect this decision,” he added.

In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Eric Wallace confirmed Patton’s claims that the pandemic was to blame for the decision to have fewer Iris in the season. He also acknowledged the public frustration generated by Candice’s absence for four episodes in a row.

Recently, Candice struck a new deal to fully participate in the ninth season of “The Flash”, which could be the last of the series.
