If you love Stranger Things, you have to love monsters. The world of the series contains a large and beautiful gallery of them, which is difficult for the heroes. There are also Demogorgons, Demodogs, and Demobats that are introduced in Season 4. But one of the main creatures remains the Mind Flayer, which reigns supreme.
A spider-like creature with giant legs made of particles and black smoke, it first appears in Season 2. A terrible monster – named after the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game – features great intelligence and its power is unlimited. He controls the creatures and also enters the mind of the human hosts – Will (Noah Schnapp) or Billy (Dacre Montgomery).
Its origin has always been unknown. But Season 4 Episode 9 finally lifts the curtain on this mystery. Although the Mind Flayer has always been presented as a supreme being, it is ultimately the work of only one person: Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). When the latter meets Helen (Millie Bobby Brown), he explains to her his arrival upside down, after having sent her there for heroin. “I became a researcher. An explorer of a realm unexplored by man“, he explains.
A flashback scene shows a badly burned Henry Creel – or one – walking into a parallel world that bears no resemblance to the upside down one as we know it today. “One day I discovered the most extraordinary thing. I saw it as a way to fulfill my potential, to transcend my human form. I became the predator I was always meant to be.”
Vecna vs. Mind Flayer.
As he raises his hand to the sky, the antagonist takes inspiration from Black Widow, who obsessed him as a child to transform a mass of storm clouds into a Mind Flayer. The sequence, impressive, shows the extent of Vecna’s power. The monster stands before him like a pupil before his master.
Eleven then realizes that all the events of the past were controlled by Vecna. If he’s not an upside-down creator, the former Hawkins lab guinea pig is his most powerful creature. He managed to give life to a real ecosystem. An ecosystem he uses as a weapon to better terrorize the townspeople.
