The cameo you didn’t know you needed.
Spoilers for ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 Episode 4 below.
Every once in a while comic book worlds overlap and easter eggs hide in plain sight and are easy to miss.
Such was the case of the recently released third season of ‘The Umbrella Academy’, which featured nothing less than a surprising cameo from Marvel.
Sadly, it wasn’t Hawkeye who stormed in to save the brothers’ day, but Jeremy Renner’s song did accompany some pretty big moments in episode four.
The Netflix series has been known for using a quirky and diverse soundtrack to choreograph its scenes: from ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’ by Gerard Way (the creator of the comic book series on which the series is based) to ‘Quando Quando When’.
Now, Renner’s version of The Animals’ ‘House of the Rising Son’ has been added to the tracklist.
The song featured in the episode, accompanying flashbacks that followed a young Harlan Cooper as he grew up with his mother, Sissy, between seasons, ending with his misusing his powers to the destructive finale.

Renner has been a musician for years and has released two EPs and a mix of original songs and covers.
Series creator Steve Blackman also recently spoke about Viktor Hargreeves’ transition in season three, as actor Elliot Page came out as transgender in 2020.
Addressing the reaction of Viktor’s brothers, he said: “We wanted to tell a story that was really pro-trans, authentic, sensitive, and show that families can accept trans people in their lives, that it doesn’t have to be something negative like it’s often portrayed in the media. That was the most important thing.”
Seasons 1 to 3 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ are already streaming on Netflix.
