The series “The Asunta Case”, which tells the story of the tragic murder of the girl Asunta Basterra at the hands of her adoptive parents, landed on Netflix with immediate success. This drama, based on real events, shocked Spain a decade ago and now moves the whole world.
The Asunta case: Actors vs. Can you actually tell them apart?
Below we present you a comparison of the actors who bring the main characters to life and the people who lived the real events.
Tristán Ulloa – Alfonso Basterra
Tristan immersed himself in the role of Alfonso Basterra, who was found guilty of murdering the minor after a controversial trial. As responsible for obtaining the lorazepam that Asuda swallowed and possessing “provocative” photos of her, the authorities sentenced him to 18 years in prison.
The Spanish actor, left, and Basterra, right, are hard to tell apart, as Netflix went to great lengths to faithfully recreate the events of this horrific crime.
Candela Peña – Rosario Porto
In the real case, Asunta’s mother was the prime suspect, lying to the police and repeatedly changing her version of events, resulting in a sentence similar to her husband’s. Tragically, in 2020, he committed suicide in prison after several previous suicide attempts.
Actress Candela underwent a remarkable physical transformation for this role and managed to convey the anguish and emotional complexity of a mother accused of taking her daughter’s life.
Iris Wu – Asunta Basterra
Despite having few appearances in the Netflix series, Asunta proved to be the most relatable character since the entire plot is based on her and played on screen by actress Iris Wu, who made her debut in this drama.
What is striking is the actress’ striking resemblance to the late Asuda, so much so that many could mistake them for lost twins. See it for yourself!
Javier Gutiérrez – Judge Malvar
Judge Malvar, played by Javier Gutiérrez, represents the real judge, José Antonio Vázquez Taín, who was responsible for investigating the Asunta case in great detail and bringing justice to this world-famous case. Although his name is changed in the fiction, his role is crucial in solving the crime.
Although the tone between the fictional character and the real one is obviously different, their characteristics are more than similar.
María León – Agent Cruces
In a case similar to the previous one, María played Begoña Rodríguez, whose name was changed to Agente Cruces in the series. He was one of the police agents tasked with collecting evidence and analyzing Asunta’s parents.
The resemblance between the two is slight, unlike the other characters who look like an exact copy, but their performance was still remarkable.
Carlos Blanco – Agent Rios
Carlos Blanco plays Agent Ríos (in real life he is called Marcos Martínez), a civilian guard who is part of the investigative team for the assassination of Asunta Basterra.
His work with the police is of the utmost importance and in fact, he participated in the mini-series “The Asunta Case (Operation Nenúfar)” where he gave previously unpublished statements about the case.
