Francis Ford Coppola is one of the most prominent directors in Hollywood, recognized for his work on the saga of “The Godfather”, “Dracula”, “Apocalypse Now” and other films. Although many were eagerly waiting for his comeback with his new project ‘Megalopolis’, the reality is that the director faced various difficulties in making it happen.

The 85-year-old director stopped his career in 2011 after his film “Twixt”, although he continued to participate as an executive producer in projects such as “The Bling Ring” or “Freda”. However, he hadn’t directed a major film in years, until the arrival of Megalopolis.
The official synopsis reveals that the plot centers around an idealistic architect, played by Adam Driver, who tries to rebuild the city into a utopia. Giancarlo Esposito will play the town’s corrupt mayor, determined to keep things the way they are.
The cast also includes Nathalie Emmanuel (“Game of Thrones”), Laurence Fishburne (“Matrix”) and Shia LaBeouf (“Transformers”), who has not appeared on screen for a long time.
The process of creating “Megalopolis” was more complicated than it seems. Coppola began writing the script 13 years ago while enjoying his vineyard in Northern California, United States, which he acquired with profits from the Godfather films. However, he assured that the idea had been around since his childhood, inspired by an old movie.
After an extended period of reflection, he decided that his next film would be a “modern Roman epic”. This idea came about after collecting examples of political cartoons and various historical subjects for more than a decade.

While his film idea seemed “crazy” in the eyes of others, given that he had rewritten the script about 300 times, it turns out that Coppola self-financed his project with $120 million, selling some of his wine property and risking releasing it in audience without the help of a distribution company.
When will ‘Megalopolis’ be released?
Against all odds, “Megalopolis” was successfully financed with Coppola’s money, wrapping up production in 2023. On March 28, it was screened for the first time for a select group of movie people.
At the moment, it is estimated that the new film of the filmmaker will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which will be held in May. This could lead to its release on the big screen before the end of the year, but there is no set date yet.
