“The Asunta case”: an actor was not going to do the Netflix series, why?

“The Asunta Case” has been highly praised for the performances of its leads, Candela Peña and Tristán Ulloa as Asunta Basterra’s parents, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra. What many may not know is that the latter was going to turn down the Netflix series, why didn’t he want to be part of this project?

The actor of Alfonso Basterra in “The Asunta Case” did not want to be part of the Netflix series

On several occasions, Ulloa has stated that, before joining the production, he knew little about the real case of Asunta Basterra’s murder, which was committed in 2013.

However, when he received the invitation to participate in the series “The Asunta Case”, the role of Alfonso Basterra was overwhelming. In a video for Netflix Spain, the actor shared: “It overwhelmed me to the point where I seriously considered turning it down. There were things that touched me very personally and there were things that gave me a lot of respect and fear.”

In an interview with “El País” he explained what those “things” were that “touched him personally”: “I am a father. I have two children: one turns 16 this year and the girl is 8. Imagine playing an alleged murderer of her daughter. It all really resonates with me. I would come at night and log out but things would come to my daughter, she could hear me talking on the phone… She is still a girl and she was asking me things about another girl. “It was very shocking.”

In addition, Tristán Ulloa did not feel able to step into the shoes of such a dark and controversial character: “I was not strong enough to face it. I had just played a very playful character in the series ‘Berlín’, I really enjoyed it and I did not see myself able to enter this abyss.”

“It scared me a little, it seemed like a deep abyss, I was a little afraid to go in there,” he added in a conversation with “EFE”.

Despite his initial doubts, the rest of the cast of “The Asunta Case” and the production team, with whom he had already worked on “Fariña,” ended up convincing him to accept the demanding role.

And it seems that his decision to join the Netflix series was the right one. On the one hand, the critics applauded his work and on the other hand, “The Asunta Case” has been a success since its premiere.

For his part, when “El País” asked the actor if he regretted his decision, he replied: “No, it was difficult, but I think I have grown somewhat as an actor and certainly as a person.”

What does Tristán Ulloa think happened in the ‘Asunta Affair’?

To play Alfonso Basterra, the actor put distance between the many theories surrounding the real case.

In an interview with “El País” he commented that his role as an interpreter in a series of this type is to “put questions on the table, but it is not our responsibility to answer them”.

However, on a personal level he seems to have his own conclusions, far from pointing out the culprits: “I honestly believe that we will never know exactly what happened. As a society we were not equal. You can face a monster, but you can’t get worse,” he added.
