About three months before the start of the Paris Olympic Games, a drag queen has been announced as one of the personalities who will participate in the relay of the Olympic Flame across France. According to AFP, Minima was chosen by the Paris City Council to carry the Olympic Torch around the city and, following the announcement, the drag artist suffered homophobic attacks from French society. Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris, reaffirmed the artist’s permanence in the relay and declared that the choice represents the values that the city defends.
“I repeat: I am proud and, yes, a drag queen will carry the Torch and the values of peace and humanity,” Hidalgo said.
“One of the messages I want to convey is the pride of my community, because ten years ago it would have been unimaginable to have a drag queen carrying the Torch,” added the politician.
Symbol of the Olympics, the Flame is traditionally lit in Greece. For this year’s edition of the games, the fire was lit on the 16th. The relay will begin on May 8th and travel 68 stages across France.
Minima Gesté will carry the Torch on July 14th, about ten days before the opening ceremony of the Olympics, which will take place on the 26th of the same month.
