Weather forecasts indicate double the average rainfall in RS over the next five days

After the climatic tragedy that has already caused more than one hundred deaths and affected more than 420 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul, weather forecasts indicate heavy rains in the state in the next five days. People continue to be rescued and many areas remain flooded.

According to Climatempo, in Caxias do Sul, for example, about 450 mm rained from May 1 to 8, which is three times the normal rainfall for the entire month. And around 300 mm of rain is still expected between Thursday 9th and next Monday 13th.

“There is no more water either in the soil or in the rivers. This volume of rain will have to be drained in other areas,” adds Josélia Pegorim, of Climatempo.

Practically throughout Rio Grande do Sul it has already rained at least twice as much as normal in the first week of the month alone. “The normal average rainfall in the month of May, over almost the entire state, varies from 140 mm to 180 mm. On the southern coast the average is between 100 mm and 140 mm. So, the prospect of 300mm of rain in five days means doubling the average across much of the state,” he said.

According to her, new events of widespread and heavy rain are expected in Rio Grande do Sul in the coming days. “The largest volumes will fall in the Serra Gaúcha, where the rivers that then go to the valleys (Jacuí, Taquari) originate. ) and part of this water goes to Guaíba,” the meteorologist warned.
