Film directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) features an actress playing a tennis player who becomes involved in a love triangle
Currently 27 years old, Zendaya It didn’t take that long to become one of Hollywood’s greatest actresses today. The works in the films Spider manat the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in the series Euphoriain particular, guaranteed him notoriety among the public and critical acclaim.
There is, however, something in common in most of the works undertaken by the American artist: she tends to play younger characters, in their teenage years, even if this does not portray her true age. On the other hand, this appears to be starting to change.
Protagonist of Rivalsa feature film premiering in Brazil on April 25thZendaya revealed in an interview with Vogue UK that it was “refreshing” to be able to bring to life a slightly older character. In the film, she plays tennis player Tashi Duncan, who finds herself in the middle of a love triangle.
“Usually my characters are always in high school somewhere. So Rivals was refreshing.”
This does not mean, however, that the new work did not come with challenges. After all, it would be easy for the actress herself to put herself in a comfort zone.
“It was also kind of scary because I thought, ‘I hope it’s convincing to people that I’m my age.’ Or maybe a little older, because I have friends who have children, or are having children.”
At another point in the chat, Zendaya reinforced the same message. She said:
“People see me as a teenager, since I’ve played teenagers for so long. Now, finally, I’m able to play a woman closer to my age. Well, technically I still play a teenager at times, but then she grows up.”
Respect for other work
Although I’m happy to play an adult character, Zendaya does not belittle his previous work. At a press conference (via AV Club), the artist made it clear that her work on the sitcom KC Undercoverat the Disney Channelprepared her for Rivals.
“I’m joking, but you know… the work of Disney it really works. It’s a good training ground.”
Back to the statements for the Vogue British, the interpreter of Michelle Jones-Watson (MJ) in the films of Marvel pointed out a not-so-positive side of having stood out so early: fame before adulthood. She commented:
“I have complicated feelings about fame attributed to children, being in the public eye, being a child actor or actress. We have seen many cases where this has been harmful. […] I’m almost going through my angsty teenage phase now, because I didn’t have time for it before. It was like I had been thrust into a very adult position: I was becoming the breadwinner for my family very early and there was a lot of role reversal going on.”
