Starring Brooke Shields, Mother of the Bride is Netflix’s boring, bland, and predictable romantic comedy
In recent years, the Netflix had good hits when it came to romantic comedies. Of successes To all the boys I’ve loved beforeGo through My eternal perhaps and the most recent Irish Orderthere have been many moments where the platform has managed to mix romance and humor in a clever way, effortlessly winning over the genre’s audience.
Unfortunately, this is not the same as what we can say The mother of the bridenew romantic comedy by streaming played by Brooke Shields (The blue lake). While it is refreshing to see a romantic comedy played by a 58 year old actressthe film is just yet another generic, meaningless story about a love affair that resolves itself years later.

Although there are well-known names in the cast that help capture the audience’s attention at first, there is nothing very convincing or even entertaining about the title. An undeniably well-crafted story, but boring and charmless, which doesn’t arouse many emotions.
An unusual meeting
Just like him Irish Order, Ticket to Paradise or even the classic My best friend’s Wedding, The mother of the bride is a feature film directed by Mark Waters (Bad Girls) about a love story that takes place against the backdrop of a wedding. A trope widely explored in cinema and which, as you can see from the films mentioned, has already managed to produce excellent stories.
This time, the plot follows in the footsteps of Emma, a geneticist surprised by the news that her young daughter is getting married. The film, which tries to sell the idea that the two characters are very close, already makes its first mistakes, as it shows that when Lana decides to break the news to her mother, Emma didn’t even know that her daughter had a boyfriend . he or she worked as an influencer.

Having overcome the initial shock of the news and the fact that the wedding is already scheduled for next month, Emma then decides to support her daughter’s decision. A choice that becomes more complicated when she arrives at the resort in Phuket, Thailand, where the ceremony will take place and discovers that the groom’s father is Will (Benjamin Bratt), her ex-boyfriend from her college.
The first great love of her life, Will left without giving any reason, leaving Emma heartbroken and without understanding what had happened. A separation that still affects her feelings today and leaves her disconcerted now that she has rediscovered her old passion for her.
From that moment on, as expected, Emma, who is a widow, and Will, who is separated, begin to live a love story full of ups and downs, in which they try to set the record straight about what happened in the past. and give a new chance to each other. This, of course, not to mention Emma and Lana, who are going through some trials in their mother-daughter relationship, aggravated by the young woman’s hasty marriage.

An uncompelling plot

Colorful and visually very beautiful, The mother of the bride It’s a very generic film that doesn’t say much about its origins. While it’s interesting to see the story’s spotlight placed on the bride’s mother and not the young woman herself, the film’s scenes all feel forced and Brooke Shields, in particular, doesn’t seem very comfortable in her role.
To make matters worse, from the middle onwards, the title takes a very confusing direction, especially when it comes to the relationship between Emma and Lana. If at first the film makes it seem that Emma is worried about her daughter’s decision to marry quickly, this is quickly forgotten and the two begin to disagree over the young woman’s work as an influencer.
Although Miranda Cosgrove (Icarly) is a great surprise in the role, the script of her character and the decisions she makes do not help the actress much, who seems to have to take on different personalities throughout the story.
Chad Michael Murray (A tree hill), in turn, the actor who plays Dr. Lucas’s manager also ends up being little explored and, in the few scenes in which his character seems to gain some shine, his participation is hastily terminated.
Boring, predictable and without any really funny jokes, The mother of the bride it certainly won’t enter the hall of iconic romantic comedies in streaming. While love stories experienced by people over 50 is a trend that Hollywood should definitely embrace, this is certainly not a title that will top the list of good references on the subject.
The hand of the bride can be seen in the Netflix catalog.
