Wes Ball’s film achieves the highest opening gross of the year in Brazilian cinemas, surpassing “Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire”




The premiere of “Planet of the Apes: Kingdom” was the biggest release in Brazilian cinemas in 2024. The film grossed R$13.18 million and was seen by 603 thousand people between Thursday and Sunday (5/12 ), according to ComScore data. The release surpassed “Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire,” which earned R$12.98 million and had 583,000 viewers on its premiere weekend, about a month and a half ago. Additionally, its revenues accounted for more than half of tickets sold in theaters during the period.

In total, Brazilian cinema box office receipts amounted to R$22.49 million, while national cinemas received 1.05 million admissions over the weekend.

The rest of the Top 6

This week’s 2nd place went to “Garfield – Fora de Casa”, whose takings were R$4.49 million and an audience of 218 thousand people. Closing the podium is “O Dublê”, which collected R$ 1.21 million by selling 56 thousand tickets.

“Civil War”, which came in fourth with R$1.09 million collected last weekend, nevertheless celebrated an important milestone, reaching R$20.47 million. The film was reportedly boycotted by the Bolsonarists.

Finally, the drama “Rivals”, starring Zendaya, closed the weekly Top 5 with R$426 thousand.
