“Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom”: the films that inspired the new story of the saga

The world of “Planet of the Apes” grew this 2024 with the premiere of “New Kingdom,” a story set years after Caesar’s reign and centered on the adventures of a young ape named Noa.

Although the plot leaves open many possibilities for the future of the saga, when creating it, the director, Wes Ball, took a leap into the past to find his inspiration.

‘Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom’: the films that inspired the new saga

In recent interviews, the film’s director, Wes Ball, talked about the inspirations behind “Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom.”

In Variety, for example, he commented that, of the films in the epic, the one he “kept constantly on his mind” was the original (from 1968), although they “dealt with the Caesar story.”

Speaking to ‘The Straits Times’, Ball added that ‘Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom’ was also inspired by director Akira Kurosawa.

He said that when he gave screenwriter Josh Friedman “a two-hour presentation of what he thought the movie could be,” he replied, “Oh, you want to do a Kurosawa movie.”

“I think what he meant is that they are films about ideas, but also genre films and pieces of entertainment,” the director explained.

The real people who inspired Proximus Caesar in ‘Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom’

The film’s director wasn’t the only one to reveal the inspirations behind his work. Kevin Durant, the English voice actor for Proximus Caesar, revealed on the ‘Inside Total Film’ podcast how he created the voice of the tyrannical leader: ‘I looked at the charismatic speakers […] Only those people who, without trying, you just have to observe them, since they have so much power and charisma.’

Especially, he said, to personalities like Tony Robbins (life coach), Elon Musk and Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was governor. Of course, he emphasized that the first one was the one that gave the most importance.
