A Hungarian court accepted on Wednesday (15) the appeal presented by the lawyers of the Italian Ilaria Salis, detained in Budapest for alleged aggression against far-right militants, to place her under house arrest.
The request was made against the decision of the last hearing, on March 28, when a judge denied his house arrest in both Italy and Hungary.
Now the 39-year-old Milanese activist, candidate in the next European elections, will be able to leave Budapest prison, where she has been for more than 15 months, after paying the bail requested by the court.
“Ilaria is thrilled to finally be able to leave prison and we are very happy to be able to hug her again,” the activist’s father, Roberto Salis, told ANSA.
For his part, the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio expressed “satisfaction with the news we received regarding the granting of house arrest to Ilaria Salis”.
Salis’s transfer to house arrest in Budapest paves the way for the woman’s possible return to Italy.
According to government sources, the authorities of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government could request the Hungarian ministry – following a request from Salis’ lawyers – for the necessary documentation and transmit everything to the competent judicial authority for the recognition and execution of the measure applied on Italian territory .
Arrested for almost 15 months and risking a 24-year prison sentence, Ilaria shocked Italy and Europe when she showed up for trial at the Budapest Court chained by her hands, feet and waist. Since then, Italy has seen protests calling for her release. .
