Netflix, the streaming giant, has reached an agreement with the NFL – the American football league of the United States – to broadcast the league’s Christmas Day games until 2026. According to ‘The Wall Street Journal‘ would be two games in 2024, one in 2025 and one in 2026. In the first year Netflix would pay about $75 million per game.
The NFL has already released the full schedule for the 2024-25 season this week and the Christmas games will be Kansas City Chiefs x Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens x Houston Texans. Since the 2021-22 season, the NFL has played at least two games on December 25. And the The result was extremely positive. The main difference this year is that Christmas falls on a Wednesday, the day on which league matches do not usually take place.
Netflix has increased investment in sporting events
The big investment in NFL Christmas games follows a growing trend by Netflix to invest in sporting events. At Christmas 2023, Netflix broadcast an event of Formula 1 drivers playing golf and, in 2024, a tennis exhibition match between Spaniards Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. Additionally, a boxing match between multiple champion Mike Tyson and YouTuber Jake Paul will be broadcast in the coming months, as well as WWE wrestling events.
Netflix sees these NFL games as a key part of its new strategy to “create great moments that really matter to consumers,” Spencer Wang, vice president of finance, told the WSJ. According to Wang, the partnership with the NFL does not represent a major change in sports focus, but rather an initiative to promote innovative events.
The company has already been collaborating with the NFL for a few years, producing the “Quarterback” series, which followed three players during the 2022-23 season. This summer it will launch “Receiver,” which will showcase other athletes’ routines during the 2023-24 season.
